For fun I love to sail, read, SCUBA dive and do home renovation and carpentry projects
My deep love for Nantucket and for our amazing community is born out of my upbringing in a small New England town and my lifelong connection to coastal locations that include eastern Long Island, Cape Cod and, of course, Nantucket. My favorite place in the world is Madaket Harbor where I love to sail and walk the beaches at Smith’s and Eel Point. I find great joy taking my grandchildren and their friends out on the boat, handing over the tiller and watching them instinctively take control. My idea of a perfect day includes a trip out to the flats on a sunny, light wind day to dig clams at low tide alone or with friends and family along for the ride.
I arrived on Nantucket for the first time in 1985. As with so many, this first step was born out of love. My husband, Charlie, and I had just started dating and he brought me here in October for his annual bass fishing weekend. I lost a big blue fish off the shore of Great Point and we had a magical dinner in front of a real fire at 21 Federal. Both Charlie and Nantucket had me hooked.
We were lucky to be seasonal homeowners from 1988 to 2004. We raised 4 summer kids – three of his and one of ours. Other family priorities led us to sell our house in 2004, but our connection to the island was never lost, as one of our kids, Lindsay, settled in after college and has stayed here ever since.
We moved back full time in 2013. Lindsay brought us our two local grand girls Luna and Harlow. Our 4 other grandchildren – Maiana, Lenora, Jules and Jayden - and their parents visit as often as they can from California and Vermont, as does our daughter, Taylor, from Baltimore.
When we moved to Nantucket, I took a position as the Finance Manager for Nantucket Looms. I joined the Affordable Housing Trust in June 2017. As I prepared for retirement in September 2019, I knew I wanted to utilize my new-found free time to put my Master of Social Work education to good use, so I joined and served as Chair of the Council for Human Services (CHS). My experiences on the Housing Trust and CHS taught me that one of the important roles of Town boards and committees is to serve as a conduit of information and ideas from the community through to the Select Board and Town Administration. Members of these boards serve as the voice of the community in the setting of policy priorities and how those priorities are reflected in the Town’s finances. My committee experience prepared me well to join the Select Board in 2022. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first term on the Board and look forward to building upon that experience as I continue to serve Nantucket for another 3 years.
